The course

This one-lecture course explores assessing how ready a patient is to start rectal irrigation as a treatment option. Brigitte delves into the theory of psychological readiness, how it works and how it can be implemented. Brigitte then hands over to Rebecca Geraghty-Staunton who shares how valuable the tool has been to her in her practice.

Here is what Rebecca had to say about the course "The recording day was a brilliant experience, to be amongst like minded professionals sharing lived experience and knowledge to improve outcomes for patients was so affirming. It has grounded my confidence in the changes we have made in practice and I hope this masterclass it gives others the chance to benefit too. The recording company were kind and patient as it was my first experience in a setting like this and all the team at Qufora really encouraged me to share my story as authentically as possible."

Rebecca also shared "Psychological Readiness can be empowering for both the patient and clinician. Utilising these skills with patients can take time but the more you practice the more confident you can become. Once you see the benefits personally in your interactions with patients, you can start to see objective benefits in outcome measures overall."

When asked about psychological readiness Brigitte shared "When I worked at Saint Marks, I didn’t think about psychological readiness – I would happily send a patient off with rectal irrigation regardless of whether they were ready to use it or not. Unsurprisingly, sometimes the product would sit unused in the patient’s home, leading to frustration on both sides – and unnecessary cost to the NHS."

Brigitte added "However I learned quickly that by assessing patients psychological readiness, we can prepare them both mentally and emotionally so that they are ready to learn how to use rectal irrigation. This can lead to improved adherence, better results, and a more positive irrigation experience, with the potential for enhanced quality of life long term"

Decision Guide

The Decision Guide is a five step approach to choose the optimal equipment and volume of water for an individual patient. It is a helpful generic tool, not biased to any one system.
